My Letter To You

This week is all about working in web3.

I wrote a thread earlier in the week detailing a little about my journey to careers in web3, and you can read that below, but here we’ll go deeper into some of the topics I touched on.

To back up a bit, when I started learning about web3 more seriously in 2021 I worked at Wells Fargo in engineering and incident management. I helped lift and shift their HR stack.

I was learning about web3 between meetings, after work, in the morning before work, you get the idea. I’m sure a lot of you can relate.

What drew me to working full-time in web3 was that my contract was nearing its end nearly the same time BFF launched its community. That was my spark into the space, an accessible (free) entry point that got airdropped to my wallet and thousands of others.

That spark enabled me to dive into the community immediately with the knowledge I’d gathered over the past year to help answer questions and doubts members were facing immediately.

All this to say, one of the best ways to find your entry into a career in web3 is to dive in and simply start helping out. The key here is to help where you are confident, especially early on. You don’t want to accidentally give someone the wrong info, but you don’t want to hold yourself back from sharing. In that case, share resources written by reputable sources in the space someone may have missed. You can find these from Twitter Lists to following founders in the space.

The return on my time investment into creating community at BFF early on is that I learned a TON about web3 culture, about how other women think about web3, how they might struggle or bond with each other, and truthfully it gave me a big leg up on my peers at the time. I also picked up my first role as moderator, letting me peek inside the inner workings of an incredible team where I gained invaluable insights from some top web2 leaders in business, finance, marketing, partnerships, and beyond.

That first role can make an entire career if you’re careful in your planning.

But why does this all matter anyway? Why is it important to dive in and help?

Well, you can’t expect people to know everything about how awesome you are by just showing up and saying, “hey, I’m cool pay attention to me”…

You have to consistently and continually show up in authentic ways as yourself so people can learn more about you. That’s what community is all about - building relationships. You have these intrinsic skills you’ve gathered throughout your career and life experiences you can use to make things less scary. You might feel ready to get down to searching for a career when you’ve: learned about web3 fundamentals, done a few deep dives, and entered a few of discords or Twitter friend groups you connect with.

This is all just one long way of saying:

  • Be authentic - let your personality shine

  • Be observant - know your surroundings, even online, open your eyes and ears

  • Be fearless - yes, it’s a lot at first, but you can learn. You are capable!

  • Be patient - with yourself, with your peers, with your URL neighbors

I was also a guest speaker this week at BFF, one of my favorite web3 communities, where we chatted about career pivots and how folks are finding new careers in web3. Check it out below.

Over the life of this newsletter, you’ll be introduced to many concepts, frameworks, and foundations that guide me in web3 community-building efforts. You’ll also have access to some fascinating digital collectible experiments I have planned in the coming months. 👀

Hint: there’s a story involved, and Inner Colors members will be given exclusive clues leading up to the events. 💛 💚 💙

It's been a strange week in NFTs. Truly never a dull moment.

Marketplace shenanigans continue, traders’ activity that reads like a soap opera, and Daily Dose community gets handed over to Zen Academy. And that's only the top headlines. Just proves that no matter what the economy is doing, crypto nerds will find entertainment and community.

If you're going through a rough time because of this week's events I did some digging for resources that might help.

This Y Combinator Video

This week I wanted to share this chat from Y Combinator that I found especially illuminating. I love their video series and watch them as often as possible. Let me know your thoughts. You should just watch all their videos relevant to you - they are too good to miss.

Have You Been Bitten?

From the imaginative mind of renowned storyteller, Eislyn, comes something new and more blood-soaked.

You can learn more about Together and check out our Twitter Spaces here.

I announced this week that Together would be starting a Twitter Space series for community professionals already in roles in web3 to chat with me and host Echo Rivetti. This is the PERFECT place to ask the Together community all your pressing questions about how to run web3 communities.

If you’re interested in joining the team here are some details! Feel free to reply to this newsletter issue or DM me on Twitter to learn more.

Below are all the Twitter Spaces I’ve spoken in, transcripts, and resources pinned to each.

Who Are You? Each Tuesday, I host a safe and welcoming Twitter Space where folks can chat with me about their hobbies and interests outside of blockchain tech. This is great for those needing to practice speaking in public audio rooms.

I've been blown away by the talent of my supporters over the past year. Here’s a selection of my favorites! I’d love to see what else you creatives I’ve gathered come up with! 😍

That’s all for this week, friends! I hope you’ve found this issue valuable, and if so, I’d love for you to recommend a friend or two to subscribe. It would mean the world. 🌈
