A Web-Native Scout Troop

This week I’m incredibly excited to announce the official launch of Cloud Scouts into the world.

When I started working in web3 full time, I knew I needed to create something that could tell my story and allow others to come along with me. However, I wasn’t exactly prepared to be or convinced I could be a founder from the start, even though I had founded multiple successful communities before.

Without the support and care from so many experienced, wise, thoughtful new friends, it would have been so much more difficult to realize this dream. So, for that, I thank all the lovely friends I’ve made in the past year and a half.

☁️ Cloud Scouts Is Here

The reason that tagline above says “Better Communities for a Better Internet” is to remind anyone who comes across the name Cloud Scouts of our aim to create spaces online for deep collaboration, experimentation, exploration, and care for human-connected communities.

Our aims are simple and focused:

• Encouraging collaboration, networking, and knowledge-sharing among community professionals at the edges of the Internet.

• Providing educational resources, workshops, and training programs to help community professionals develop skills and stay updated on industry trends.

• Promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the web3 space by fostering a welcoming and inclusive community environment through collective decision-making.

• Facilitating mentorship, and career development opportunities for community professionals.

• Contributing to the overall success and growth of the web3 ecosystem by supporting and nurturing strong, healthy communities.

The vision we hold to guides us:

To create a high-quality, thriving, inclusive, and empowering community for all community builders, fostering collaboration, growth, and innovation.

🎪 Fascinated By The Art of Play

I am deeply moved by how experimentation through play and creative joy can help us learn skills that stick for a lifetime.

This is one of the many reasons I created Cloud Scouts.

This is the purpose of creating an intentional structure, allowing members to organize themselves, decide for themselves through consent and rounds, and create spaces and programs together for the benefit of one another.

What we produce, and hence the benefit we bring to the wider ecosystem, are hands-on experiences for the community builders of today and tomorrow to develop the skills necessary to push themselves forward.

🪪 Identity Through Authenticity

I’ve been creating spaces for identity since I was a child, beginning when I enlisted the help of a couple of friends to create a recess game that included hand-drawn identity cards.

Before Pokemon, before Yu-Gi-Oh, at 10-years old we had created a PFP game - these were kids I grew up with, kids I went camping with, played video games with, and created school newspapers with.

It’s incredible thinking about how long I’ve been creating togetherness in various spaces. 😍

As we continue building resources (Notion) at Cloud Scouts, one of our goals is to create a space to display the reputation and skills that Circle contributors and Scouts have gained.

One of the frustrating things about how fast the internet moves is that we can hardly keep up with the accomplishments and activities of our friends. Then, when we do, it’s lost or forgotten about a week later.

If these moments of skill achievements are displayed as credentials earned, that makes it super easy to filter for participation and development.

Community builders need a space to display their work and accolades. Aside from the noise of Twitter and Discord, we need spaces that attract those looking to hire us and share our work.

⎌ As Discussed Previously

In previous issues of this newsletter, we’ve discussed multiple roles that emerging communities could empower their members with, and those have obviously been leading up to this announcement.

Any community can allow members to take up these roles within their ecosystem to strengthen their efforts, true ownership of commitments, and the decentralization of creativity.

Within Cloud Scouts, we can challenge the ideas of community, how we gather online, and how we decide among ourselves.

I see a massive opportunity for human-connected and tech-enabled communities as we are most certainly at an inflection point in society.

With the incredible advances in AI, challenging how we connect globally is more important than ever. We choose now how our future selves will create connections and relationships.
